Biscuits and Gravy Casserole
Most holiday weekends, I always try really hard to make breakfast for the fam. Over Mothers Day weekend, I tried out this recipe for Biscuits and Gravy Casserole from the Lemon-Sugar website. Let me tell you, this is an awesome dish! It’s very versatile too, as you could make it for home OR for a brunch potluck (which is what I did).
This dish couldn’t be easier to make. After you preheat your oven to 400, open your biscuits (I used Grands) and cut them into quarters. This recipe calls for one can, but it also is made in a really small casserole dish, like a 7×10. I’m sure you could easily double this recipe to make it fit in a 9×11, if need be. Put a single layer of biscuits in the bottom of the pan and cook for 10 minutes.
While the biscuits are cooking, you can prepare the gravy by browning the sausage. The recipe says to use only 1/2 of the sausage, but I used it all. After the meat is cooked, sprinkle the flour onto the sausage and cook for 3-5 minutes. Stir in milk and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and then simmer for a bit, until your desired consistency. It should still be a bit runny, but not too runny. Also, make sure you taste the gravy at this point, just to make sure you have the seasoning right.
Pour the gravy over the cooked biscuits and then add the rest of the raw biscuits to top. Bake 20-25 minutes.
I loved that the prep of this recipe was only like 20 minutes. The last thing I want to do on a weekend is spend an hour making breakfast.
As for the taste, YUM! The biscuits were flaky and buttery, and not even a bit soggy. But what really blew me away is the depth of flavor in the gravy. I have had some pretty bland biscuits and gravy in my life, but this tasted like I’d been slaving over the stove all morning. Such a perfect dish!
